Top 10 “Must Haves” when buying a Diamond.

There definitely are MUST HAVES to look for when choosing your diamond.

Below are important questions to ask ANY jeweler about the benefits they provide when purchasing a diamond from them.

If the answer is “yes”, ask for the answer and details in writing … they should be more than happy to provide it.

  • Does my Diamond come with a “Lifetime Diamond Promise” (aka: Warranty)? IS IT FREE?
    • At Lee Read, the Lifetime Diamond Promise that comes with your diamond jewelry is FREE.
    • It covers your diamonds against loss, for life, just as long as you come in once every 6 months for a standard checkup.

Why would a jeweler charge you a fee just to take care of something they are selling to you “brand new”?
  • Does the jeweler provide additional upkeep and maintenance for my Diamond? IS IT FREE?
    • At Lee Read, we will rhodium plate (“re-dip”) your white gold Lee Read jewelry FREE of charge and it only takes about 15 minutes.
    • We will also tighten any loose diamonds your jewelry may have, for FREE.
    • You will always receive preferential Lee Read Service.
    • For the first 3 years we will also guarantee your diamond against chipping or breaking,
    • We will also guarantee your jewelry against defects or workmanship for the first 3 years as well.
    • During this 3 year period, we will size your ring as often as needed as well as solder your set together.
  • If I miss my 6-Month Check Up, does my Lifetime Diamond Promise (aka: Warranty) expire?
    • NO. If for some reason you miss a 6-Month Check; we will re-instate your lifetime Warranty once your Lee Read Diamond Jewelry has been inspected and found to be in good and complete condition.
  • Does my jeweler have IN-HOUSE GOLDSMITHS who can provide “While You Wait Service” for my jewelry on proper maintenance and repairs? Does the jeweler have to send my jewelry out of their store to provide my “Warranty” services?
    • At Lee Read, not only do we always have goldsmiths available, but you can actually watch them working on your jewelry.
    • We don’t have to send your jewelry out.
    • Most of the time, your repairs are completed “While You Wait”.
While jewelry repairs require master craftsman performing their skill at a very high level, jewelry repairs DO NOT take 1-4 weeks to complete. You should never have to be without your diamond jewelry for that long.
  • Can I ever trade my diamond in for something bigger?
    • At Lee Read, we realize there may be a time when you wish to have a larger diamond.
    • We warrant that the trade-in value of your Lee Read Diamond will increase 5% per year, for a maximum of 5 years. You will receive this 125% trade value of what you paid for your original Lee Read diamond toward a new Lee Read Diamond just as long as your new Lee Read Diamond is double the amount you paid for your original diamond, plus any appreciation.
    • The original Lee Read Diamond must be in good condition.
  • Is the grade of my Diamond accurate?
    • At Lee Read, all loose diamonds, including “Lab Certified” diamonds, have their color and clarity grades RE-GRADED, using the strictest standards by our Certified Gemological Appraiser (CGA is the highest level of gemological training).
This verifies the accuracy of the Diamond Certificate as some certificates are inaccurate or are forgeries.
  • Can my jeweler guarantee that my Diamond is NOT a Conflict Diamond? How?
    • Since August 2000, Lee Read requires all of its diamond suppliers to sign an agreement stating that all the diamonds we receive are from “Clean Sources” and not from conflict areas.
  • If I change my mind, can I get my money back?
    • At Lee Read, we will gladly give you a full refund within 7 days of purchase and a full exchange within 30 days.
When shopping for a diamond, always verify (in writing) that you can return your purchase for a full refund, not just an in-store credit.
  • Is my jeweler LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED?
    • There is a certain confidence when you know a business is locally owned and operated.
    • Big “chain” stores tend to be a corporate jungle of policy and exceptions.
At Lee Read, we have over 50 years of experience in the Treasure Valley and 3 generations of the Read Family living here and working for you.
  • Is your jeweler a “Preferred Jeweler”?
    • At Lee Read, we are members of “Preferred Jewelers International”. It is a national network of independent jewelers who have banded together to give their guests the CONFIDENCE of buying from a local, trusted jeweler paired with the CONVENIENCE of having a nationwide presence across the country.

BEST ADVICE WHEN BUYING A DIAMOND: Your Eyes Never Lie. Since 1963, we have never bought a diamond without looking at it first -- and neither should you.

- No two diamonds are exactly alike, and each has its own characteristics and beauty.
- It would be impossible to appreciate a diamond simply by looking at the certificate that accompanies it.
- To really appreciate a diamond, you need to see what makes that diamond unique. “Show me”, it’s as simple as that.

What about the 4 Cs? The “4 Cs Grading Scale” is an OPINION BASED scale that was developed by the Gemological Institute of America. While this scale provides helpful guidelines about a diamond, it is NOT the main factor in determining whether a diamond is beautiful or not.

- The “4 C’s” refer to guidelines that narrow down the Cut, Clarity, Carat and Color guidelines of a diamond.
- The Internet is a great resource for becoming familiar with the basics of the 4 Cs, but please be cautious; the information can be misleading.
- You should always view a diamond before buying, so you can personally see and understand what makes your diamond beautiful.

When buying a diamond, seeing REALLY IS believing. Your eyes NEVER lie.

Lee Read Diamonds pass high standards tests. Lee Read has a complete in-store Gem Lab and Certified Gemological Appraiser. He has received the highest levels of gemological training available from the Gemological Institute of America, the same organization that created the 4 Cs grading scale.

We regularly reject diamonds that do not meet Lee Read standards, regardless of the grade claimed on the certificate. We refuse to depend on someone else's interpretation of grading for a Lee Read Diamond.

If you're purchasing a Lee Read Diamond, we grade it, and we stand behind that grade.

What about “Certs”? All Lee Read Diamonds have been officially graded by a certified Gemological Institute of America Graduate Gemologist as well as an American Gem Society Gemological Appraiser.

- Diamond Quality Documents or “Certs” are sometimes provided by diamond suppliers and jewelers to further verify the “opinion based” grade of a diamond.
- While SOME diamond quality documents or “certs” provide an accurate depiction of a diamond’s grade; there are MANY that are INACCURATE.
- A misconception of a Diamond Quality Document or “cert” is that it will verify the value of a diamond. None of these pieces of paper will ever list the value of the diamond it represents. They merely are an attempt to provide an “assurance” as to the quality of a diamond.

At Lee Read, we never buy a diamond without looking at it first, regardless of the laboratory or company that prepares the certificate.

Who can you trust? You can always trust: 1) Your Eyes and 2) Your Preferred Jeweler.

- A knowledgeable jeweler can help you understand what makes one diamond more valuable than another. Your jeweler can also show you what makes each diamond unique.
- We will gladly show you your Lee Read Diamond under extreme magnification, so you can easily see its characteristics, beauty and value.
- We will also show you our interactive video to teach you about where diamonds come from, what they look like when they are found and how they are cut

Have Fun! Finding your perfect diamond can be an amazing experience and should be a FUN experience.
