I'm going golfing with my girlfriend's father this weekend. I think I am going to ask his permission to marry his daughter. Any advice?

How much you love his daughter

I'm kind of shy. I can't see myself making a spectacle of my proposal. But I'm worried my girlfriend will feel like she got gypped if I don't do something grandiose. Am I right to worry about this?

Dear Pete,
A marriage proposal is romantic no matter what. You could probably propose during the Evening News and it would still be perfect.

Heck, you could even pop the question while you're picking weeds and it would be something special. Actually, that's not a bad idea. You could put the ring in a flower bed or something. Feel free to steal that idea. We won't get upset.

My boyfriend and I are planning to get engaged this year. I have the utmost trust in him when it comes to all but one thing: picking out a ring. I'm afraid he's going to get me something I don't like. How do I tell him I want to pick it out without hurting his feelings?

Well Steph,
Why don't you come into Lee Read Jewelers without telling him. Pick out the ring of your dreams, and we'll make a record of it. Then tell him to go to Idaho's Diamond Jeweler. When he comes in, we'll make sure to direct him to your ring. We won't pressure him, because we don't do that here, but we'll try to point him in the right direction.

Or you can just be honest and tell him you want to pick it out. He'll get over it.
